Description
Who we are
Founded in 2023, Carbon Removal Canada is an independent non-profit accelerating the responsible scale-up of carbon removal technologies by advocating for impactful, research-backed policies, shaping Canada’s carbon removal market, and connecting the right people to the right information. We work with public and private actors to rapidly build the carbon removal industry. Together, we can position Canada as a global leader, unlocking investment for carbon removal, driving economic growth, and meeting our climate targets.
The role
Canada has the world’s longest coastline, world-class ocean science, and companies already delivering some of the first verified ocean-based carbon removal in the world. Despite the high potential for this pathway, marine carbon removal remains one of the most underresourced areas in Canadian climate policy. Carbon Removal Canada is seeking a Lead or Director of Marine Solutions to help fill this gap, leading and scaling our strategic efforts in enabling the responsible development of ocean-based carbon removal in Canada.
Reporting to the Executive Director, you will shape Canada's policy landscape by conducting targeted regulatory research and driving system changes to enable modernized frameworks that are evidence-based and reflect the urgency of climate action. You will bring together government, industry, Indigenous Rights Holders, and community leaders to expand political and public understanding of ocean-based carbon removal. We are looking for a proven public policy expert and relationship builder who thrives in establishing emerging industries.
This is a 24-month position with possibility of extension.
What you’ll do
- Lead Carbon Removal Canada’s marine carbon removal efforts, setting strategy and priorities for this new workstream
- Conduct and translate regulatory research that clarifies how international commitments, existing Canadian statutes, and permitting pathways apply to marine carbon removal
- Advance regulatory modernization that enables responsible alkalinity enhancement projects, particularly in Eastern Canada, working across federal departments and provincial governments
- Promote the responsible inclusion of marine carbon removal in federal policy and programs
- Convene key stakeholders, Rights Holders, and partners through events and coalitions
- Expand the political and public understanding of marine carbon removal, including potential co-benefits of deployment
What we’re looking for
All candidates must have:
- Expertise in Canadian public policy and regulation, including experience working across federal and provincial jurisdictions (5+ years)
- Demonstrated experience building relationships and coalitions across a wide range of stakeholder types, including government, industry, researchers, and communities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate technical and regulatory complexity for policymakers and the public
You’ll really impress us if you have:
- Experience and/or existing knowledge of marine-based carbon removal, marine biology, fisheries, chemistry, environmental conservation, or climate science
- You have previous experience establishing an emerging industry
- You are fluent in English and French
Location, travel, and hours
This position is located within Canada, with a strong preference for Ottawa, ON. Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada.
As a remote team distributed across Canada, Carbon Removal Canada holds in-person team retreats quarterly, with additional ad-hoc in-person meetings as needed.
