Description
About Carbon Removal Canada
Founded in 2023, Carbon Removal Canada is an independent non-profit accelerating the responsible scale-up of carbon removal technologies by advocating for impactful, research-backed policies, shaping Canada’s carbon removal market, and connecting the right people to the right information. We work with public and private actors to rapidly build the carbon removal industry. Together, we can position Canada as a global leader, unlocking investment for carbon removal, driving economic growth, and meeting our climate targets.
Carbon Removal Canada is a registered charity governed by a volunteer Board of Directors under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (CNCA), supported by Governance and Fundraising Committees.
Board Recruitment
Carbon Removal Canada will soon be entering its 2027 to 2030 strategy period, and long-term financial sustainability is a board-level priority. The Board is recruiting a Director who will open new doors for the organization, with the ability to connect Carbon Removal Canada to funders and partners it does not currently reach. This may include family offices, corporate philanthropy, philanthropic collaboratives, and mission-aligned institutional partners, with the goal of helping to convert those connections into durable relationships and partnerships.
Responsibilities
All Carbon Removal Canada Directors share the duties set out in their Terms of Reference, including fiduciary oversight under the CNCA, regular attendance and meaningful engagement at Board and Committee meetings, and adherence to Carbon Removal Canada’s Board Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. The Board Terms of Reference also task all Directors with supporting Carbon Removal Canada’s culture of philanthropy, contributing to the organization’s financial wellbeing through volunteer efforts, identifying new opportunities, and their own expertise as aligned with the mission. All Board Directors act as visible, credible ambassadors for Carbon Removal Canada and the carbon removal sector.
We’re looking for someone with:
- Established relationships with funders or prospective partners new to Carbon Removal Canada, such as family offices, corporate giving programs, climate-focused philanthropy, or mission-aligned institutions
- A track record of building partnerships that produce or contribute to durable revenue
- Willingness to make introductions and direct asks in collaboration with Carbon Removal Canada
- Experience in climate, energy, cleantech, finance, or entrepreneurship
- Alignment with Carbon Removal Canada’s mission and its nonpartisan, evidence-based approach
- Capacity to commit the time described below
Priority candidates will have:
- Networks in regions such as Alberta and the Prairies or Quebec
- Prior nonprofit board, campaign, or major gift experience
Candidates must meet CNCA and Income Tax Act eligibility requirements for Directors of a registered charity in Canada.
Term & Commitment
- Two-year term, renewable per organizational bylaws
- Board members serve without remuneration, with reasonable expenses reimbursed
- Attendance at quarterly Board meetings (with one in person meeting per year), Fundraising Committee meetings, preparation time, ad hoc donor and partner meetings, and events
- Regular attendance and meaningful engagement
